Welcome to Kenwood, a public elementary (K-5) school in Minneapolis

An exciting time for our school!

As of Fall 2021, nearly half of our families are new. Whether you are a new Kenwood family, interested neighbor, or prospective parent—the Woodchucks welcome you.

Our 1908 building is located on Kenwood Park, between Lake of the Isles and Cedar Lake.

Today our community includes many neighborhoods across Uptown and Downtown Minneapolis. Our pathway schools are Anwatin Middle School and North High School.

Smarts + Arts

In the heart of the Kenwood neighborhood near the School Forest at Cedar Lake, Kenwood Community School provides an inclusive, joyful, and student-centered atmosphere for children to learn and grow.

Kenwood's commitment to the arts, academics, rigor, and race equity inspires creativity, collaboration, and a commitment to civic engagement. Relationships with families and community partners are integral to the way that Kenwood students thrive.

Arts integration and PTA-sponsored residencies at every grade level are what spark the Kenwood slogan: Smarts + Arts = Kenwood Community School.

In addition to regular arts programs and field trips, ongoing residencies bring professional artists into school to work with students and teachers to enrich the classroom experience and reinforce aspects of current curriculum. Residencies are a crucial and unique piece of the Kenwood experience generated by teachers and funded by the PTA (with grant support). Some examples are: African drumming and dance with Brother Ghana, Midwest Food Connections, Taiko drumming, Roots global dance, and Contemporary Native American Arts.
